Rooftimers!

While Mother Nature cooperated this year and gave us two gorgeous days for playing volleyball, I, on the other hand, was not quite as thoughtful. Unfortunately, this year we failed to coordinate schedules with Southern Connecticut Volleyball, and we each ended up scheduling a tournament for the weekend of July 21-22. At least, that is the theory for our slightly lower attendance (compared to last year's record-breaking 278). This year, we came in with 48 doubles teams on Saturday, 41 doubles teams on Sunday along with 16 Quads teams for a total of 242 people. OK, we know some of the 4s teams actually had 5 people, and one of the doubles teams had three (don't ask, just let me say, you might want to think long and hard before agreeing to play with me). Even with our slightly lower attendance, we did a fantastic job of raising funds for the Dutchess Coalition for the Homeless. Including the proceeds from the Voluntary Rooftime Offering at the weekly pick-up games at Overlook on Wednesday and at Memorial Field on Friday nights, the registration fees, cookies (kids do not make change!), raffle money, t-shirt sales (go tie-dye!) and rather generous donations from a few individuals, we managed to collect $7007. (I know that number is going to increase, but we couldn't resist publishing $7007 for 2007). Most impressive. Thanks! Xie-xie! Kiitos! Merci! Danke! Grazie! Arigato! Kamsamnida! ???????! Gracias! Last year, we had the first win by a parent-child team, and this year, we decided to create a whole new division for them. We are extremely pleased to report that we had 4 teams compete in the first Parent-Child Division with three sets of fathers and daughters and one mother son team. Where will Rooftime go from here? We have a feeling that in a few years, we'll also have some Masters (over 50) divisions...

As usual, there are tons of people to thank. First of all, to all the players who travel from both near and far, thanks for participating in this event. This year, the out of state guests came from New Hampshire (not even expecting to play, I might add), Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Without you, there would be no tournament. To all the sponsors for donating the prizes (so that all the proceeds can go directly to the homeless shelter), donations for the shelter and for the cash donations. Finally to all the people who work so hard to make this tournament run so smoothly.

This year, we managed to snap a photo of all the first and second place winners and in a few days (once our web-master returns to the country), we'll get them out on our web-page ( www.rooftime.net ). In addition, our roving photographers (Tim Diemoz and Carolyn Torella) have gone digital, which means we should have plenty of Rooftime 15 memories. See you in 2008! And speaking of Rooftime 16, we are thinking about moving over to rally scoring for at least the Open, AA and A divisions and all the 4s. Why? Because I would like to eat dinner one night before 9pm... (I think this is just another sign of the aging of the tournament directors.) Any opinions? Just let us know!
