Rooftimers!
I usually express my gratitude to all the folks involved with Rooftime by listing out "Thanks" in many different languages (one for each year). However, this year, before I even get to that point of the note, I feel the need to apologize. Saturday started off with grey skies and a fine mist in Poughkeepsie, and the forecast called for showers and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. There was a little confusion as to whether or not we were still on, but undaunted by this discouraging prediction, we still hit the field and started the tournament around 9:15-ish. Unfortunately, the rain did indeed arrive, and after taking a short break around 1:30 to let a small sprinkle pass through, by 2:00 the rain became rather steady. Half an hour later, we contacted non-playing spouses at home and determined we were under a huge green blob that stretched all the way west to Port Jervis. Given that update, I decided it was time to call off the tournament. As expected, most folks packed up and hit the road, but a few die-hard volleyball geeks hung around on the side of the field and lamented the loss of play time. Rather unexpectedly, thirty minutes later, the rain stopped, the sun poked out and it remained clear (though hot and humid with slick grass) for several hours.
I am so sorry for prematurely calling out the tournament! Sorry, Duwabuqi. Anteeksi. Excusez-moi. Entschuldigen Sie. Mi scusi. Gomen nasai. Chesonghamnida. Prostite. Lo siento mucho. Het spijt me. Köszönöm. Izvinite. Ann eazinak. I will NEVER again cut-short our play time because of weather. I'll hang out at the field until the sun goes down (and even that is only a temporary condition as the sun will rise again in 10 hours or so).
Mother Nature compensated us for the horrible weather on Saturday by granting us a fantastic day on Sunday; cloudy with temperatures in the low 80s and low humidity. The sun poked out around 3pm, and at 3:30 I thought I might have to cancel the tournament because it was too sunny, but luckily it didn't come to that.
The final results: we had a record-breaking number of players, besting last year's total of 266 by 12 and hitting the 278 mark, and with the proceeds from the Voluntary Rooftime Offering at the weekly pick-up games at Overlook on Wednesday nights, the registration fees, t-shirt sales and rather generous donations from a few individuals and the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, we managed to raise a record breaking $7865 for the Dutchess County Coalition for the Homeless. Furthermore, the sales from the food booth generated over $700 for Hillcrest House (a sister organization of DCCH under the Hudson River Housing umbrella). Not too shabby! Thanks! Xie-xie! Kiitos! Merci! Danke! Grazie! Arigato! Kamsamnida! Spasibo! Gracias! Bedankt! Bocsánat ! Hvala! Shukran!
But wait, there was another significant first (as far as I could tell from researching the Rooftime Archives). This year we had our first parent-child team take a title at Rooftime! Iwao and Rachel Hatanaka, traveling all the way from Acton, Massachusetts, finished in first place on the Reverse Coed B Net. And to strengthen this Rooftime tie, Rachel's parents (Iwao and Melissa) are part of the "founding parents" (politically correct gender neutral term, of course) of Rooftime, when back in 1993 (when Rachel was still an infant) a bunch of volleyball geeks decided to conduct their first charity tournament. And now Rachel is carrying her father in doubles - I feel so old!
As usual, there are tons of people to thank. First of all, to all the players who travel from both near and far, thanks for participating in this event. Without you, there would be no tournament. To all the sponsors for donating the prizes (so that all the proceeds can go directly to the homeless shelter), donations for the shelter and for the cash donations. Finally to all the people who work so hard to make this tournament run so smoothly.
In a few days, we'll get some pictures out on the web-page ( www.rooftime.net ). This year, I think I managed to snap a photo of all the first and second place winners (though there was some odd icon in red on the display, so we'll see what I actually got). If you have some pictures you would like to upload to the Rooftime web-page, just send them to me and we'll get them out there.
